LIVINGSTON, James
(d.), b. Scot. 1814, d. 1894. He was a weaver by trade in the old country, and
came to Canada in 1843, with his wife and one child, and set. first in Ontario
Co., where he started a weaving business and carried it on for 6 years. He then
came to Arthur, and took up the present homestead of 97 acres, lot 1, con. 4,
where he put up a shanty and commenced to clear his farm. Fergus was their
nearest place of business and mill. Mount Forest, at that time, had only one
building. He worked hard and cleared his place, and both he and his wife
deserve great credit. After 7 years he started weaving again, and kept it up as
long as he was able, making the cloth, with the assistance of his wife, for all
the neighbors. They started with out means, and established one of the finest
homes on the line, raising and educating their children.
Mr. Livingston was a very charitable man, and an active church worker, and one of the most respected men or the county. He was a Baptist and a Liberal. In 1866 he m. Mary McMillan, in Scot. Issue: Mrs. James Raye, Maggie, Catharine (d.); Duncan, Arthur Tp; Mrs. H. Terrey, B.C.; Mrs. T. Willits, Donald, Agnes, in Mount Forest; Mrs. J. Costley, and James, in Toronto. Donald, b. 1857, purchased the homestead where he carries on mixed farming. He was in the grocery business for 5 years, before settling upon the homestead. He is much respected, and is a Baptist, and a Liberal. In 1880 he m. Susan Whitley, of Egermont. Issue: Milo S. (d. 8); Lawrence E., Flossie M., Pearl E., and Roy M.
