LAWRENCE, George G
. Mayor of Palmerston, belongs to an old English family, his father, the late
George Lawrence, was b. in Norfolk, Eng., in 1816, and was a pioneer in
Woolwich, Waterloo Co., Ont., in 1832. He came to Canada without means, but by
dint of industry and executive ability, he became an influential and prosperous
citizen of the locality where he settled and passed his useful life. He was the
owner of 145 acres of land at the time of his death. He had a large family the
members of which are substantial citizens in Waterloo and Wellington Counties.
George G. Lawrence early started in life on his own account, first in Pilkington Tp., where he found employment at farming for a number of years, and later in the meat business in Elora. He had saved money and was thus enabled to buy out his employer. He ran the business successfully for five years, when he again embarked in farming for two years. In 1892 he came to Palmerston and opened a meat market, and is a leading man in his line in the town. He takes an active interest in municipal affairs. He was in the Palmerston Council for six years, and was elected Mayor in 1905. He m. Laura Kerr, of Elora, and has the following issue: William J., Laura T., Edgar, George A., Charles M. and Jessie.
