LANGDON, Luke (d.), b. Somersetshire, Eng., 1901; d. 1874, age 73. The Langdon family were agriculturists in Eng. For generations, and the late Luke Langdon was foreman of a large farm in Eng. He came to Canada and Arthur Tp. in 1847, and set. on 100 acres, lots 22 and 23, con. 4. He had just $1 in his pocket when the family arrived in Arthur. From this small beginning he accumulated a fine property, and became an influential and prosperous citizen of the community, where he lived until his death. He m. in Eng. Ann Paddon, she d. 1889. Age 89. Issue: Mark, James, and Mrs. Thomas Rhame, set. Arthur.

Mark, b. Somerset, Eng., 1831, was sixteen years old when he came to Canada with his parents, and has been the balance of his life here. He started on his own account when 33 years old, and earned the fine property of 222 acres of land of which he is now possessed, besides educating his family and giving them a good start in life. He is a Baptist and a Liberal. In 1857 he m. Martha Batho. Issue: Mrs. James Waters, Arthur; Mrs. Wm. Pierce, West Luther; John, Edward, Regina; Mrs. Benj. Long, Cal.; James, Oxford Co.; Mrs. James Murphy, Cal. ; George W., Louise, Fred and Frances A.

Of this branch: John, b. Arthur, where he has always lived, owns 100 acres, lot 22, W.O.S.R., and carries on mixed farming, his principle business is building and contracting, making a specialty of cement block houses and granolithic pavements. He was a Councillor for one years, and Reeve in 1905 and 1906; a Liberal and a Baptist. He m. Jennie Blyth. Issue: Myrtle, Ralph, Ida, Hazel, Blyth and Ida.

George W., unm. set. in St. Thomas, where he has been general agent for the International School of Correspondence. He is a graduate of McMaster University, class of 1903.

James, b. Somerset, Eng., d. 1881. He came to Arthur with his parents in 1847, and lived there until his death. He was a very successful farmer, as well as storekeeper at Petherington. He was a man of wonderful push and energy, and kept fine horses and good stock, and left 140 acres at the time of his death. He m. Mary J. Lewis, who still survives. Issue: William, Mrs. George Edwards, Postmaster, Petherington; Mrs. John McCullough, West Luther; Mrs. Geo. Cushing, Kenilworth; Luke, Sault Ste. Marie; Mrs. H. Atkinson, Toronto, and James L. (d.)
