Biographical Sketches of
Early Settlers of Wellington County

KEMP, Clarke (d.), was the son of the late John Kemp, of Niagara, where the subject of this sketch was born in 1820. He was one of a family of thirteen, and his father was one of the earliest settlers along the Niagara River. Of his father's family, David Kemp was a soldier of the War of 1812-13, and served in the engagements on the Niagara Peninsula; another brother was the well-known Capt. John Kemp, who sailed on the Lakes for many years, and was a pioneer of York Co., and d. in Toronto.

Lowry Kemp came to Eramosa in 1846, and lived on lot 1, con. 1, which was given to him when he was fifteen years old.

In 1843 he m. Anna Thomas, dau. of Michael Thomas, of North Pelham, Welland Co. Their children were: George, of Vancouver, b. 1847; John, of Vancouver, b. 1851; Mrs. Richard Hampson, of Mt. Forest; Henry, of Niagara-on-the-Lake, b. 1855; Matthew, of North Dakota, b. 1859; Mrs. Steven Ramage, of Kamloops, B.C., and Thomas, who lives on the homestead in Eramosa, b. 1849. He m. Helen Thomas, dau. of Edward Thomas, of Nassagaweya, Halton Co., and has one dau., Ada Helena.

The late Clarke Lowry Kemp was a man of strong convictions and strict integrity; he was very successful, being a man of good executive ability, a member of the Methodist Church, and a strong Liberal in politics. His wife died in 1902, and in 1905 he followed her to the better land.
