KELLY, John , was b. Dublin Co., Ire., in 1826. He came to Canada in 1847, and worked as a farm laborer in Eramosa for five years, after which he drove the stage from Guelph to Owen Sound for some years. He then worked for farmers about Guelph for some time, and finally came to Arthur Tp., where with his brother-in-law, Thomas McEllistrum, he took up 50 acres of land. Seven years later he sold it, and took up 100 acres, lot 13, con. 3, West Luther, which was all swamp. He cleared a part of it, and sold out at an advance, and then purchased lot 16, con. 1, West Luther, which he cleared from the bush. He is a Roman Catholic, and a Liberal. In 1855 he m. Mary McEllistrum, of the pioneer family of that name in Guelph. Issue: Fenton, at home; Mrs. D. McQuinn, Arthur; Mrs. James Close, Garafraxa; James, Luther; Thomas, Arthur; John, Buffalo; Dennis, Arthur; Mrs. John Curtis, Luther, and Maggie at home.
