KEITH, Donald
, was b. Islay, Scot., 1828, and came to Canada when 25 years of age.
His
father had come out one years before him, taking up a farm on the Egremont
side. Donald took up the present homestead of 184 acres, lot 1, con. 3,
Arthur, now known as "Greenmount Farm". Mr. Keith took up this bush farm from
the Crown, valued at #1.50 per acre, cleared it and made it one of the most
beautiful homes in Wellington County. He experienced all the hardships in
connection with pioneer life in the bush, and many times felt discouraged and
inclined to throw it up. He sailed on the lakes for three summers, and
chopped in the winter, until he could get started. Their crops were frozen
for five years in succession. His farm is now up-to-date in every detail,
buildings, stock, improvements, etc., and the establishment is considered
good value at $10,000, which shows the place that Mr. Keith occupies in the
history of the county; taking up land worth at that time so little to the
Province as an asset, improving it to its present value, and educating his
family. Mr. Keith can now take life easy, and can look back and say that he
ever did anyone an intentional injury. He is a Presbyterian, and a Liberal.
In 1871 he m. Janet McTaggart. Issue: Mary, Euphemia and Nicholas Hugh.
Nicholas Hugh, the only son, inherits the old home. He is a very up-to-date young man, and a modern farmer. From: Historical Atlas of the County of Wellington, Ontario. Toronto: Historical Atlas Publishing Co., 1906 |
