JOSE, John
(d.), was b. in Cornwall, Eng., where he m. Mary Chapman, and in 1848 they
emigrated to Canada, settling in Nichol. In 1854 he came to Minto, and took up
100 acres, lot 25, con. 2, expecting to move his family the following spring,
but in January, 1855, death removed this pioneer, leaving little for his widow
and seven children, excepting the interest in the Minto farm, on which
settlement duty was required. The eldest child was fifteen years of age at this
time, and the widow went heroicly at the task of providing for her little
family, managing to hold on to the Minto farm until 1862, when they moved up
and made permanent settlement on it. This is but one of the may chapters of
heroism in pioneer life, and illustrates the kind of material that our
forefathers were made of. Issue: Ann, John, set. Mich.; Robert, Charles set.
Man.; William (d.), Mary and Edward. The widow d. in 1895, age 76.
The Jose boys cleared the farm, having been thrown on their resources by the death of their father, in early youth. But a pious mother guided their footsteps, and all prospered and became the best of citizens. Robert and Edward own the old homestead and make a specialty of Durham grade cattle. The family are members of the Methodist church. From: Historical Atlas of the County of Wellington, Ontario. Toronto:Historical Atlas Publishing Co., 1906 |
