JONES, James
(d.), was b. in Ire. in 1823, and d. in 1893, age 70. He came to Canada as a
young man, and worked for a short time in Toronto, afer which he went to North
East Hope, where he worked for his brother long enough to earn some money,
after which he purchased 100 acres of bush land. This he cleared and improved
so that when he sold it in 1877, the bush which he purchased for $200 brought
$5,500. He then came to Maryborough and bought 200 acres, lot 2, con. 2, where
he lived until his death. He was a very successful man; a Methodist, and a
Conservative. He m. Ann McGrath, who d. in 1903, age 80. Issue: John J.,
Milverton; Samuel, William C. (d.), Robert, Perth Co.; Mrs. Johnston, Man.;
Aaron, Listowel, and Nathaniel.
Samuel, b. North East Hope Tp., came to Maryborough with his father in 1877. With his brother Nathaniel he owns the old homestead. They carry on mixed farming, and pay attention to breeding and selling of draft and driving horses. In the present year, 1905, their team of draft horses took first prize at all the local fairs at which they exhibited. They have also some fine roadsters. They have fine buildings, with all the latest equipments in their barns. Both are unmarried, and are Methodists and Conservatives. From: Historical Atlas of the County of Wellington, Ontario.
