JOHNSTON, Craster
(d.), was b. in Northumberland, Eng., in 1798, and came to Canada with his
wife and two children in 1830. He spent the summer in Hamilton, where one of
the children died. After he paid the funeral expenses he had only 50 cents
left. He left Hamilton and set. on lot 13, con. 10, Puslinch, where he was
successful, not only in a financial way, but in a personal way also. He was one
of the most respected and intelligent pioneers of Puslinch Tp. He was a good
scholar, and always took an interest in educational matters, and was Trustee
when the present school house was built at Arkell. He was a Presbyterian, and a
Liberal, and d. 1867. He m. Margaret Stevenson in Eng. Issue: Mrs. Paul Ross,
Winnipeg; Robert, d. infancy; Mrs. James Scott, Arkell; Jane d. infancy; Mrs.
Wm. Milne, Hamilton; Mrs. James Ainslee, Hamilton; and Mrs. John Murray, who is
now living on the old homestead, purchased by the Murrays in 1871. Craster
Johnston was one of the most successful farmers in Puslinch, as he came to
Puslinch without means, and was able in 1857 to retire.
