JESTIN Family, The . The founder of this family in Canada was the late Richard Jestin, who was b. in Queen's Co., Ire., in 1762, and d. in Eramosa, 1832. He m. in Ire. Elizabeth Payne. She d. 1848, age 88 years. They came to Canada with their family in 1827, and set. first in Toronto Tp., and in 1830 set. in Eramosa on lot 10, con. 7. Issue: Martin, William, George, James, Mrs. Edward Shaw, Mrs. George Peavey, Mrs. William Soper and John.

Martin, b. Queen's Co., Ireland, 1813, d. Eramosa, 1865. He m. Margaret Hill. She d. in 1873. The late Martin Jestin was a very active man, and while he never sought municipal honors, took a healthy interest in political as well as the general questions of the day. He was a man of strict integrity, and had he not passed away at comparatively an early age, would have undoubtedly taken a still more prominent part in the affairs of the township. Issue: Martin J., William, Mrs. William Parks, Mrs. Geo. Cutting, Mrs. John Grieve, Mrs. John Howson, Warren, John, Mrs. Henry Duffield, Mrs. John Blackley, Mrs. John McLaughlin, Alexander (d. unm.), Rebecca (d. unm.), and Robert.

William is a prosperous farmer near Meaford; John is a builder at Pt. Elgin; Warren m. Elizabeth Shaw and owns 250 acres in E. Garafraxa, where he resides, and is a leading man.

Robert m. Bessie Duffield, and owns and lives on the old homestead. He makes a specialty of road horses and of breeding pigs. Issue: Maes, William, Tindall, in N.-W.; Mrs. William Morris, Frederick, Lizzie and Bessie.

John, b. 1827, has been married twice. His first wife was Sarah Jackson, and his second wife, Rhoda Loree. Issue: Obadiah, Sarah (d.), John, Jr.; William, George and Nellie (d.). Mr. Jestin came from Toronto Tp. with horses and waggon; the road was a very rough one and almost impassable, and he followed a foot path in cutting a road through the woods from the Blacks to his land; wolves were heard every night. The homestead was a Clergy Reserve lot, and was finally settled for to the Government by John, who had bought out his brother. John Jestin is now retired at Everton, where he is passing the remaining years of his well spent life respected by all who know him.
