JACKSON, Samuel
, was b. Co. Down, Ire. 1820. He came to Canada in 1851, and worked at his
trade as carpenter for three years in Hamilton. He decided to take up land in
Luther, and walked from Hamilton and took up the present homestead of 100
acres, lot 2, con. 4, where he still reside. It was all bush at that time, and
he had to follow "blazed" paths and to put up his own shanty. He started in
life without money, and acquired his property by his own industry, raising and
educating his family, and helping them all to start in life. He endured
hardships and dangers in pioneer life, and never had any trouble in law or with
his neighbors. He has been School Trustee, and has always taken an active
interest in politics. He is a Liberal, and a Presbyterian. In 1858, he m. Mary
Ann Copeland, who is living at the age of 71. Issue: James, Listowel; William
J., and Samuel, Jr., Luther; Ann L., at home and Robert, Arthur village.
Samuel, Jr., lives upon and owns east half of lot 2, con. 8. When he took possession of his farm it was all swamp, with no buildings. Now, he has a new modern house, and a fine bank barn, all assessed at $4,500. Mr. Jackson has been very successful, and is one of the young men who say, "Canada is good enough for me." In 1890, he m.
