JACKSON, John
, b. Yorkshire, Eng., 1809, d. 1885, age 75. He came to Canada in 1830,
settling in Aurora, York Co. In 1846, he moved to Peel Tp., and took up 400
acres of land, which was partly cleared, and from which he developed a fine
farm, which is still held among his descendants. He was a strong church man,
helping to build the first Meth. church in Peel, of which he was afterwards
prominent in management. In political views, he was a Liberal, but did not take
a great interest in party affairs. He m. Elizabeth Coates, who d. in 1896, age
86. Issue: William, James (d.); Graham (d.); John, Graham, Robert (d.); Henry
H., George, and Alfred.
William, m. Harriet Clarke, and is a successful farmer in Peel. John, was b. in King Tp., York Co., in 1841, and came to Peel with his father. He purchased and cleared his own farm of 500 acres, 300 of which he has given to his sons, retaining the homestead of 200 acres, which is in a high state of cultivation. He carries on mixed farming, and feeds a large number of cattle for export. Mr. Jackson is a first class citizen, and highly respected, a Methodist, and a Liberal. He m. Hannah Jackson, who is living, age 62. Issue: Wellington, m. Annie King; Wesley, m. Ida Bruce; Nelson, m. Addie McFadgen; Alfred, unm.; Herbert, unm.; Edith, and Mabel. Graham m. Ann Fenton, and set. in Berlin. Henry H., b. Tecumseh Tp., in 1845, and came to Peel the following year with his father. He succeeded to the homestead of 230 acres, lot 10, con. 2, where he is engaged in mixed farming, and raises, Clydesdale horses, with which he has won prizes at various fairs. He also feeds a number of cattle for market. He is a vigorous man, and an up-to-date farmer, much respected by all who knew him, a Methodist, and a Liberal in political views. His first wife was Regina Udy (d.). Issue: Mrs. Jacob Johnston, set. in Peel; Ralph R., set. in Man., and Fedora. His second marriage was to Sarah J. Harper. George, b. in Peel, 1847, owns the 200 acres, lot 9, con. 2, where he carries on mixed farming, and feeds cattle for market, feeding nearly everything raised on the farm. He is a Presbyterian, and one of the Managers of his church, a Liberal in politics. He has held the office of Councillor for five years, and is Reeve at this writing (1905) . He m. Henrietta Kilgour.
