ILES, John
(d.), emigrated in 1836, to Puslinch Tp., from Wiltshire, Eng. He was on lots
7, 8, 9, and 10, con. 9, from 1836-39. He set. finally in 1839 on 200 acres,
part lots 3, 4, 5, and 6, con. 9. He took a great interest in stock raising,
and with F. W. Stone, started to import Durham cattle and Cotswold sheep, but
the vessel carrying their stock had such a rough voyage, that all the cattle
had to be thrown over-board to save the ship, and the sheep, being on the upper
deck, were all washed off into the sea, so that the venture proved a total
loss, and thereafter Mr. Iles purchased his stock from Mr. Stone. He was a very
successful breeder of Durham cattle, taking prizes at Toronto and Brantford,
where the Provincial fairs were held. His services as an expert judge were
constantly in demand at Toronto, and at the various county and township fairs.
He served as Township Councillor for a few years, and as School Trustee for a
number of years more. He m. first, Ann Carter of Oxfordshire, and second, Ann
Sallows, nee Gauntlet. His first family consisted of Mrs. Thos, Carter, Arkell;
Mrs. Wm. H. Decker, Halton Co.; Daniel, Grey Co.; Henry, Eramosa Tp.; Mrs.
Caulfield, Grey Co.; John, Mrs. Daniel Bardwell, (d. 24 years of age). His
second wife's family consisted of, Martha (d. unm. at 45); Robert (d. 27), and
William.
Henry, m.. Catherine Arkell, and set. in Eramosa Tp. John, b. 1839, m. Isabella Orme in 1864, and in 1867, purchased the Oulton homestead of 115 acres, pts. lots 3, 4, 5, and 6, con. 9, where he has since lived. Issue: Peter, assisting on the farm, and Annie, at home.
