HUGHS, John (d.), was b. county Monahghan, Ire., and came to Canada settling at York Mills in 1844, and d. at Thornhill. In the spring of 1854 his three sons, William Thomas and Charles, came to Minto, and set., taking up 400 acres, lots 104 and 105, con. C., and 104 and 105, con. D. This was before the advent of railways, and they took the boat from Toronto to Hamilton and stage from Hamilton to Elora, following the blazed path through the woods from Elora to Minto.

William, the eldest son, had preceded them a few weeks and had erected a log shanty for their accommodation. Hugh and James Darroch had been there a few months and William and James Blair came in about the same time. Other settlers soon came in, and while the familiar sound of the settler's axe could be heard in all directions, and clearings were rapidly being made, it was long time before the wolves and bears ceased to be a menace to these pioneer settlers. The Hughes brothers helped Mathew G. Miller build his store at Teviotdale the year they came in. They were b. in Ire., and were well educated, energetic, powerful young men when they came to Minto. They took a leading part in its early affairs. William being many years in the Council and active in municipal matters. He d. some years ago. Thomas is still living in Cotswold. Charles makes his home with his son William Charles, who runs the homestead, 100 acres, lot 104, con C. The latter m., Mary E. Campbell, dau. of Colin Campbell, and had one dau. Edna Frances.
