HUGHES, Robert, Sr ., b. Co. Cavan, Ire., 1812, and d. 1892, age 79. He came to Canada in 1839, settling first in Toronto and in 1841 he came to Arthur and purchased lot 24, con. 2, where he set. He m. Isabella Carson in 1837, who d. 1902, age 90. Issue: William, d. 1904, age 66; Robert, Mrs. L. Smith, Mount Forest; Mrs. Robert Sims, Mt. Forest.

The late Robert Hughes was a sterling citizen. He was a member or the English church, and in politics a Conservative. He served in the Arthur Council for one term, but outside of this he did not hold municipal office. His son, Robert Hughes, Jr., was b. in 1844, on the Arthur farm, and was one of the first mail children b. in Arthur Tp. He succeeded to the farm which he carried on until 1903, when he retired owing to ill health. He is unm; in politics a Conservative and a member of the English church.
