HOWES, Andrew
(d.), was b. Northampton, Eng., 1812; m. Isabella Blackwell; emigrated to
Canada 1846; d. in Minto, 1884, aged 72 years. They had the following issue:
Edwin, Joseph, Samuel and Joshua, b. in England; John, Mary and Rachel, b. in
Canada.
On coming to Canada the family set. at New Hope, afterwards called Hespler, where they remained until 1860, when they followed the tide of emigration to Minto, Edwin and Joseph having preceded the family two years. Of the family Joseph and Samuel became citizens of Rochester, N.Y.; the latter losing his life in the American Civil War. Edwin, Joshua, John and Rachel remained in Minto, the latter becoming the wife of Duncan Donaldson. Mary, m. James Henry and set. Dakota. Edwin, the eldest son, b. 1834; d. 1902. When he came up to Minto he purchased 100 acres, lot 25, con. 14, which he and his brother cleared, and later he bought lot 26, con. 14, making his holdings at the time of his death 200 acres. He m. Catharine McLachlan, dau. of the old pioneer, John McLachlan. Issue: Frank H., Dr. David E., Joshua A., Janet, Pearl, and Randolph. Frank J. and Joshua A. run the homestead of 200 acres. Joshua Howes was two years of age when the family came to Canada, and sixteen years old when they came up to Minto. In 1869 he embarked in the sawmill and lumber business in company with Francis Brown, and eight years later purchased Brown's interest, and has since carried on the business on his own account. Joshua Howes has been a very successful man, and occupies a high position in the estimation of the people of the district. He held municipal office in Minto several years, being Councillor, Deputy Reeve, School Trustee, etc. He is a consistent member of the Christian church and a temperance man. He m. Agnes, who was also a dau. of John McLachlan, and a sister of his brother Edwin's wife. Issue: Mary I., John S. (d.), Edwin J., Andrew T., Charles J., Catharine J., William B., Olive A., Alfred W. and Joseph E. Edwin, m. Matilda Wilson, set. Toronto. Andrew T., m. Effie Shannon and owns 100 acres, lot 23, con. 14, Minto. Besides Joshua Howe's lumber interests, he is a large land owner and farms extensively.
