HORTOP, Henry, Sr
. (d.), b. Devonshire, Eng., 1815, d. in Elora, 1882, where he was buried. He
was raised and educated in Eng. and afterwards learned the trade of miller. In
the early forties he came to Canada and set. at Whitby, and in 1850 came to
Eramosa and bought the "Eden Mills," which he ran successfully for many years.
He was a man or sterling qualities, possessed of business ability of a high
order, and had the confidence and respect of a very large acquaintance, as
milling in those days meant dealing with the farmers for many miles around, who
not only sold their wheat to the mill, but all the flour and feed that they and
their stock consumed had to be ground there. He m. Elizabeth Weir. Issue:
James, in Toronto; William, who was in real estate business in Oklahoma, and d.
in Chicago; Elizabeth d. in Brantford, and Henry, Jr. Henry Jr. b. 1848, m. in
1874 Fanny Duffield. Issue; William H., and Charles. William H. m. Emma Benham.
He runs the mills at Everton and is partnership with his father. Issue:
Clarence.
Charles is at home with his father. James A., son of Henry Hortop, Sr., is in the flour and feed business in Toronto, a member of the firm of John Brown & Co. Henry Hortop, Jr., has successfully carried on the business left by his father, and also bought out the grist and saw mills at Everton mentioned above. He has always taken a leading position in Eramosa, and is one of its most prominent citizens. He has been a Councillor of Eramosa, and in 1898 unsuccessfully contested the Riding for the Provincial Legislature against Lt.-Col. John Mutrie.
