HOLMWOOD Family, The
. This is an old English family, with an estate in Sussex, now owned by the
Duke of Norfolk. Its founder in Canada was John S. Holmwood, who came to
Ancaster with his family in 1832, where he d. some years later. His family
consisted of Mrs. William Mann, Mrs. Thomas Crooks, Mrs. (Rev. ) Britton, Mrs.
Lea Britton, Henry, Walter, George S., and Robert P.
George S. Holmwood was b. in Sussex, Eng., in 1823, and came to Canada in 1832. In 1848, he purchased a farm in Waterloo Co., near Winterbourne, where he lived until his death in 1871, age 48 years. He early took and active interest and leading part in the affairs of the community. He became Capt. of the militia, with which he was connected for years. He was brought up in the Church of England, but in his new home he affiliated with the Presbyterian church and he became one of its most active members and supporters. He had received a good education, which he augmented by extensive reading, and on general topics, was a well posted man. Of strict integrity, he enjoyed the confidence of all who knew him. He m. Margaret Brander, who d. in 1891, age 65 years. Issue: George, Clementina (d. young); Mrs. James Kirby, John S., Walter (d. age 21); William T., Jessie, and Mary. Of this branch, George, the eldest son, was b. and brought up on the Winterbourne farm. After finishing school he engaged in farming, and in 1875 came to Guelph Tp., where he has since lived, being an extensive farmer near Guelph city limits, on the Elora road. He m. Elizabeth Taylor, and they have the following issue: Gilbert T., George S., Nellie I., and Jennie T. He has been School Trustee for some years, outside of which he has held no office.
