HOLLAND, John
. This respected pioneer of Minto, was b. at Butterwick, Lincolnshire, Eng, in
1830. There he attended school, and later, engaged in farming. On reaching his
majority in 1851, he came to Canada, first settling in Toronto, and in 1853, he
m. Ann Millwood. John Holland and Annie Millwood were b. on the same day, Dec
21, 1830, and it was never known which was the senior. Mrs. Holland d. June 7,
1902, and her funeral was one of the largest ever in Minto.
In 1858, they came to Minto, where Mr. Holland purchased 50 acres, being part of lot 41, con. 6, and there they set. and commenced the active work of home-making in the bush. He cleared this farm and raised a large family, and in later years, purchased 50 acres. adjoining. Mr. Holland has given considerable time to scientific farming, raising over twenty varieties of potatoes in one year, and had given the community the benefit of his experiments, besides taking prizes at the agricultural fairs, on his fruits, potatoes etc. He was for years a Director of both Harriston and Howick Agricultural Associations. He was one of the founders of the Methodist church in the neighborhood, and a class leader for over forty years. He was three times a delegate to Conference from Minto station, once to Clinton, at the time of union, once to Guelph, and once to Goderich, the year after the first union. Mr. Holland takes a deep interest in the temperance cause, and was a charter member of the Maitland Society of Good Templars, and Worthy Patriarch, and Past Worthy for many years. There were 42 members of this society and all are still holding to their temperance principles, although not united to their parent society. In politics he is a Liberal. Mary Hewey, Minto; Mrs. William Rayson, Mrs. Thomas Leppington, Minto; Henry R., who m. Lena Metcalfe, and set. in the N.W.; Isabella, unm. ; Mrs. William Lawrence, Minto; Joseph, who m.
