HINDLEY, William
(d.), was b. Lancashire, Eng., 1787, and d. 1856. The Hindleys are a numerous
family in Lancashire, and the town of Hindley is named after them. Mr. Hindley
was a soldier in the regular army for twenty years. He came to Canada in 1835,
when the oldest daughter, Mrs. Isaac Anderson, of Luther, was fire years old.
At the time he came to Eramosa it was a forest, and Guelph a hamlet,. With the
help of his son-in-law, Isaac Anderson, he cleared his farm. He was a man of
great personal activity, working up to the time of his death; of a genial
disposition, quiet and unassuming. He was an ardent sympathizer with Mackenzie
in the Rebellion of 1837-8. He thought that he was a suspect at the time of
Peter's arrest, and hid in a cellar to escape, although it was not known
whether there was any warrant out for his arrest. He was an ardent Liberal, and
a member of the Anglican church. He m. Elizabeth Ingham, who d. 1866, age 59.
Issue: John (d.), who was a Congregationalist preacher, and had two sons, who
are ministers, in that denomination; William, a farmer in Eramosa, where he
owns 437 acres; Joseph, George, a Congregationalist minister in the U. S. ;
Mrs. Isaac Anderson, Luther; Mrs. Jacob Smith, Erin; Mrs. Jessie Anderson (d.),
Erin; Mrs. John Webb (d.), Erin; Mrs. William Webb (d.), in U. S. ; Mrs. John
Peters, Fergus; Mrs. Richard Thomas, Barrie and Eve, Eramosa.
Joseph B. 1845, set. on 100 acres in Eramosa, with his brother. After some years he sold out his interest to his brother, and in 1885, bought his present farm, lot 2, con. 15, Erin. This is one of the best farms in Erin, and he has built a fine brick house, in which he enjoys prosperity. He makes a specialty of feeding hogs and cows. Like his father , he is an ardent Liberal, but is independent in spirit. He m. Bella Robinson, in Erin Tp. Issue: Mary, Lizzie, and William Roy.
