HERSHEY, Robert
, b. King Tp., York Co., 1845. He worked for some time on his stepfather's farm
in King Tp., and then learned the shoemaker's trade, but never worked at it
after serving his apprenticeship. At the time of the American Civil War he went
to Buffalo and secured a position with a butcher, and while there secured an
insight into the cattle business, which he has since followed. He carried on a
wholesale butcher business in Toronto for seventeen years. In 1894 he purchased
his farm of 248 acres, lot 4, con. 12, Arthur, which he ran in connection with
the cattle business, raising large numbers of cattle for export, having forty
head at the time of writing, and altogether seventy-five head on his farm. He
is a Methodist, and a Liberal. In 1874 he m. Sarah Wanaby, who d. 1894, age 42.
Issue: Mrs. John Long, California; John and Alfred, at home; Nelson and Ida,
California; and Norman.
John, b. in York Co., in 1878, is on the homestead, where he carries on mixed farming. He is highly respected, and is a Methodist and a Liberal. In 1904 he m. Janet McTaggart. Issue: Annie M. .J.
