HENRY Family, The
. The pioneer of the Henry family in Canada was John Henry, b. Co., Cavan, Ire.
He came to the U.S. in 1811. He was seven weeks and three days crossing the
ocean, and proceeded up the Mohawk River in a flat-bottomed boat, and by stage
to Lewiston, and boat to Toronto. In 1816 he bought a farm at Port Oshawa.
His son Thomas did military service in the war of 1812, and managed to save $400, although only seventeen years of age when the war ended. With this he purchased a farm near Port Oshawa. In 1817 he m. Elizabeth Davis. He was one of the pioneer ministers of the Christian church in Ont., preaching and doing missionary work for over forty years. Phimeas (d.), was the son of Thomas Henry, and was b. in Ont. Co., in 1836, and d. in 1900, age 64. He came to Maryborough Tp. about 1875, and purchased 150 acres, part of lot 18, con. 10, where he farmed until his death. He was in the Drayton Council for about three yeas, and for some time on the Drayton School Board. He belonged to the Christian church, and was a strong Reformer in politics. He m. Emeline Hall, Darlington Tp. Issue: Emerson, Ormiston and Orland. In Drayton. Emerson was b. in Ont. Co. in 1863, and came to Maryborough at the age of twelve. At the age of twenty-one he became a clerk for John White, who kept a general store in Dratyon. After six years he started for himself in the grocery, boot and shoe business, which he conducted for twelve years. In 1902 he purchased the farm, lot 17, con. 13, and in 1903 purchased 100 acres, lot 18, con. 10. He was on the School Board of Drayton for one year. He is a Methodist, and a Reformer. He m. Clara Trask. Issue: Cecil, Murrel, Clarence and Mary. Ormiston was b. Ont. Co. in 1865, and was about 10 years of age when he came to Maryborough. He succeeded to the homestead at his father's death. He carries on mixed farming and makes a specialty of Percheron horses, owning a horse, "Cindare," imported from Lafayett Indiana, by Couch & Sons. He was on Peel and Drayton Agr. Soc. Board since his father' s death; is a Methodist, and a Reformer, and is on the Committee of the Reform Association at Drayton. He m. Sarah, dau. of John Walker, pioneer of Moorefield.
