HAWKINS, Jonah
(d.). This pioneer was b. in Yorkshire, Eng., in 1802 and came to Canada in
1836, settling in Guelph Township, where he remained four years. In 1840 he
purchased lot 6, con. 2, 100 acres, in Eramosa, where he lived the balance of
his useful life. He was a successful man, and from a small beginning acquired a
competency, raising his family and giving them all a good start in life. He was
a member of the Methodist church and in politics a Liberal. He m. Mary Kirby,
in England, who was b. in 1803, d. at 71. He passed away at the ripe old age of
88 years, and left six children: Robert, in Drayton; Joseph, John, in Erin;
James S., Thomas, Mrs. Fielding, William and Mrs. Baldick. James S., m. Rachel,
dau. of John Sunley, and set. Guelph City. Thomas, set. in Detroit;
William, b. on the Everton homestead in 1848, m. Harriet McLean in 1879. Issue: James H., who assists on the homestead. He is a member of the Pres. church, and in politics is a Conservative. From: Historical Atlas of the County of Wellington, Ontario. Toronto:Historical Atlas Publishing Co., 1906 |
