HARPER, William,
b. Co. Cavan, Ire., 1825. His father d. in Ire. and he came to
Canada with his mother and one brother in 1842. His mother took up 50 acres of
land, William being too young at the time to get his grant. When old enough he
took up the homestead, 228 acres lot 10, O.S.R. He cleared this land from the
bush, and experienced all the hardships incidental to this period, and was
there when the first team came through from Erin Tp. with a load of pork. That
was many years before Mount Forest was started, and Arthur Village was the
nearest postoffice, there being only three houses in the place at that time. He
has been very successful, and at one time has owned 428 acres of land. He has
raised and educated his large family, three of whom are teachers, and he is
held in the highest esteem, the fact that he has never been sued speaking
volumes. He is a Presbyterian and a Conservative. In 1850 he m. Catherine
McMillan, who d. in 1901 age 66. Issue: Philip, Toronto; William Jr., O.S.R. ,
Arthur; Mary, Mount Forest; Mrs. George Anderson, Arthur Tp.; Mrs. Henry
Macauley, Minto Tp.; John, Montana; Mrs. H. Buchanan, Waterloo County; Murdoch,
O.S.R., Arthur; and Joseph and David, Man.
William Jr., owns and lives upon 88 acres, part of the old homestead, where he successfully carries on mixed farming. In 1893 he m. Olivia Shaw. Murdoch, b. 1873, lives upon and owns part of the homestead. He carries on mixed farming, and is successful. He is a Presbyterian and a Conservative. He in 1900 m. Cerena Ternan.
