HARPER, James (d.), b. Cavan, Ire., 1816, and d. 1890, age 73 years and 9 months. He came to Canada and Arthur Tp. then called the Queen''s Bush, in 1842 and set. on the present homestead of 130 acres, lot 9 O.S.R., of which he bought the right for $45. At that time it was all bush, and the O.S.R. was not built, and all of the provisions had to be brought from Fergus, there being no mill nearer. The travelling missionaries used to hold services in his barn, and the congregation were seated on rails.

He was a successful man, and at the time of his death, owned 230 acres. The late Mr. Harper was prominent in municipal affairs. He was one of the first Reeves and Councillors of Arthur, and was appointed J.P. under the John Sanfield Macdonald Government. He was a member of the Board of Managers of the Presbyterian church, and a Conservative in politics. In 1864 he m. Abigail Blanchard, who is living age 84. Issue: Mrs. Robert Sivell, in Luther; Philip, in the N.W.; Mrs. John Lyons (d.), Minto; William, Algoma; Mrs. Theo. Flath (d.), Drayton; Esther, Toronto; James J. (d.); Robert M., in Arthur; John A., Waterloo Co.; and Henry D.

Robert M. b. 1863, lives upon, and owns part of the Arthur homestead. He owns and works 312 acres of land, and carries on mixed farming. He is School Trustee, Elder in the church, and in 1906 was appointed J.P. He is a Presbyterian and a Conservative. In 1886 he m. Mary Ann McIntosh, b. Puslinch. Issue: James G., Charles C., John A., Earl R., and Edward S.

Henry D. b. 1868, lives on the Arthur homestead and carries on mixed farming, also breeding Shorthorn cattle. He has been School Trustee for a number of years, and is one of the most successful on the O.S.R. In 1901 he m. Amanda Morrison. Issue: Alva, Ermel M., and Ira D.
