HAMILTON, John
(d.), b. Belfast, Ire., came to Canada, 1836, and set. on lot 1, con. 7,
Puslinch. He was a Presbyterian, and a Conservative. He m. Martha Grant. Issue:
Alexander, William, John, and Mrs. Todd, in Ire. Alexander was the first of the
family to leave Ire. He landed in New York, and three years later his father,
mother, and two brothers, joined him. Alexander, and John , with their parents,
came to Puslinch, and set. on lot 1, con. 9, now owned by the grand-dau., Ellen
Hamilton. Not a tree was cut on the place when they came. He m. Mary Kennedy,
and set. on lot 2, con. 10, rear. Issue: John (d.).
William, born Carrick, Fergus, Ireland, died 1899, age 89m came to Puslinch three years after the others, and took up 200 acres lot 2, con. 10. Later, he exchanged it for the homestead lot 1, con. 9, and sold the front to Cummings. He had the first two seated carriage in the district, bought in Rochester N. Y. He was a great stock man, and was very industrious and energetic. The old saying was, "To work as hard as William Hamilton." He was one of the first members of Dr. Torrance's church, and a Conservative in politics. He m. Ellen Donovan. Surviving issue: Mrs. Thomas Hepburn, Guslph; Eliza, a nurse in New York State; William, Jr., Ellen, Guelph, and Mrs. William Hamilton. William Jr., has been Councillor of Guelph Tp., for a number of years, and School Trustee for S.S. No. 7. He is a cattle buyer and ships to the N.W.T. He takes a strong interest in church matters, and is a Manager of Knox Church. In politics he is a Conservative. He m. Lucy Anstey. Issue: Joyce, Grace, Nellie, Fred, and Edward.
