HAMILTON, G. Powell . The Hamilton family are natives of the parish of Listmahagow, now part of the city of Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

Francis Hamilton, the pioneer of the family in Canada, came about 1821, and settled with his family in Dalhousie Tp., where his son , George Hamilton, was b., in November, 1822, and was the first male child b. in that township. In 1849, George, with his young family, moved to the Huron Tract, going by boat to Hamilton, and ox teams, thence to Hibbert Tp. in Perth County, where shortly he was surrounded by his father, four brothers and a sister, with their families. Four years later, William, George's third son, was born. At nineteen years of he left home, and after spending some years as an accountant, part of that them in the office of the Stratford Beacon, in 1881, entered the life insurance business, with the North American Life Assurance Company, representing them as district agent and inspector at Listowel, London, and for the past 15 years, in Toronto, being the oldest agent on the staff. He is one of the best known Sunday School workers in Canada. He is a past President of the Ontario Sunday School Association, and is now Chairman of the Executive Committees, (General and Central), and the Ontario representative on the executive Committee of the International Sunday School Association.

G. Powell, the oldest son, b. at Listowel in 1880, was educated at London Public School, Parkdale Collegiate Institute and Toronto University. He is a member by examination of the Institute of Actuaries of London, Eng. In 1897 he entered the Head Office of the North American Life Assurance Co., and worked up through a number of different positions in the office. In 1903, he came to Guelph, as their District Manager for the Counties of Grey, Bruce, Dufferin, Wellington, and part of Huron. He also writes Accident, Health, Burglary, and Employer's Liability Insurance, and deals in Bonds and Debentures. His long and varied actuarial and office experience has placed him in a position to handle these lines to a distinct advantage. Mr. Hamilton is a member of the Board of Trade, a member of Norfolk Street Methodist Church, and like his father, takes an active interest in Sunday School work. He is considered one of the ablest business men of the city.
