HAMILTON, George Colquhoun
(d.), was b. in Lanarkshire, Scot., in 1815. He was killed by accident on his
farm in Nichol Tp., June 29, 1878, and was buried with military honors in St.
Andrew's Church cemetery, Fergus. He received a liberal education in Scot., and
at the age of 19 years, came to Canada, settling in Nichol Tp., in 1834, where
he took up 200 acres of land, lots 10, 11, 12 and 13, con. 15. The country, at
that time, was new and wild, and only a few settlers had preceded him. At this
time, he and his neighbors, used to go for supplies to Hamilton, with ox teams
attached to jumpers. During the trouble on 1837, he enlisted in the militia,
and was stationed in Galt. He afterwards devoted a good deal of time to
military matters, and became a Lieut-Col. in the militia. In politics he was a
strong Conservative, and in religion he was a member of the Presbyterian
church. He m. Charlotte, dau. of the late Capt. William Allardice, who d. in
1902, age 73. Issue: Thomas J., and Capt. William A., first battalion of
Connaught Rangers, now stationed in Ireland. He has been stationed in Malt,
Egypt, and India, and in active service in South Africa. Thomas J., was b. on
the Nichol homestead, was educated at the local schools an in Guelph, and later
in 1867, in Edinburgh, and still later at Dr Tasse's famous school in Galt, and
also took a course in the Business College in Hamilton. He was in the office of
the Wm. Leslie Rafting Co., near Kingston for some time, and was later, in the
banking office of John Beattie, at Fergus, for six years. In 1885 he went into
the coal and wood business, in Fergus to which he subsequently added the Fire
Insurance business, as at present. He was in the Fergus Council for five years,
and Director of the Central Wellington Agr. Soc. for some years. He is a member
of the Masonic fraternity, A.O.U.W., Sons of Scot., I.O.O.F., C.O.F., and
I.O.F., C.H.C., being an Noble Grand of I.O.O.F. No. 73. He has been President
and Sect.-Treas. of the Board of Managers of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church
for 16 years. In politics he is a Conservative. He m. Sarah, dau. of the late
Dr. John Ralph Graham of Tilsonburg. Issue: Charlotte, Mary , George, Florence,
and Sarah.
