GRUER, William , was b. in Castletown, Braemer, Aberdeenshire, Scot., in 1833. He came to Canada in 1856, first to Toronto, thence to Guelph, and in December, 1856, to Mount Forest. He has been prominent there for nearly forty years. His business was a contractor and builder. He owned and operated a planing mill, sash and door factory, and did a large business in Mount Forest, also in Wellington and Grey counties. He has also been associated with his brother-in-law, John Naismith, in the building of several railway contracts, the last being from Palmerston to Durham. During those years he has been twelve years Public School Trustee; afterwards, 22 years in the Town Council, seven of these years a member of the County Council; and at this writing, 1906, is Mayor of Mount Forest, having held said office for four years. He owns several stores and dwelling houses in town, and has, during all those years, paid 100 cents on the dollar. He was m. first to Miss Isabella Gowdy. No issue; second, to Miss Agnes Naismith, Mount Forest. Issue: one daughter, who is m. to Mr. A. G. H. Luxton, Manager of Hamilton Bank, Milton, Ont. In politics Mr. Gruer has all those years been a Reformer, until the famous salary grab game, and now he is an Independent.
