GRAY, George .
One of the leading citizens, and business men in Harriston, was born in
Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Scot, where he was raised and educated, and later
served an apprenticeship to the building trade, and studied architecture in
Glasgow, Scot. In 1869, he came to Canada and followed the business of
architect and builder in Guelph for two years, settling in Harriston in 1871.
In 1876 he established the Harrison Planing Mill, which is still operated by
his firm, and is one of the leading industries in Harriston, their output
being disposed of in different parts of Ontario.
The name of George Gray is a household word throughout the district, as for over thirty years he has taken the contracts for building, and has drawn the architectural plans for the principal buildings in Harriston and the country surrounding it, which will long live as a monument of his genius and enterprise. Mr. Gray is an active member of the Presbyterian Church, and one of the founders of Guthrie Church, Harriston, being for years the Chairman of the Board of Managers. In politics he is a strong Liberal, and at one time took an active interest in municipal affairs, and served successively as Councillor, Reeve and Mayor of Harriston, in all for eleven years, and only withdrew from municipal life when his large business interests demanded it. In 1888, he was appointed a Justice of the Peace. In 1903 John Gray was taken into the firm, which since been known as George Gray & Son. This firm so long established in Harriston, has the well merited confidence of the whole community. From: Historical Atlas of the County of Wellington, Ontario.
