GRAY, Archibald .
(d) was
b. near Edinburgh, Scot, 1822. He m. Margaret Brown and in 1853, they
came to Canada, settling in St. Catharines. The Grays had been millers in
Scotland for generations. They had a mill lease for 999 years, which was
fully used in the family. The late Archibald Gray was brought up in this
business, and worked at it two years in St. Catharines, and then became head
miller at Wissler's Mills, Salem for twenty five years, after which he built
the Clifford Mills, which he sold, and bought a grist mill in Bruce County.
He was a well educated man, active and a progressive. He passed away in 1900,
his widow surviving him. Of his family, two sons remained in Wellington Co.;
James, of Rockwood, and John, of Clifford, where he is a teacher. William, is
in Hamilton; Archibald, in Detroit, and George, in B.C.
James, b. St Catharines 1855, came to Eramosa in 1883. He was head miller with Mr. H. Hortop, Everton, for ten years, when he purchased the Lorne Mills, near Rockwood, where he has a flourishing business. He m. Margaret Elliot. Issue: Jessie and Archie.
