GRANT, James . The subject of this sketch is a well-known educationalist, as well as farmer, in Wellington Co. He was b. in Aberdeenshire, Scot., where he was brought up and received a fair education, but his thirst for knowledge did not allow him to stop there, as he is an omniverous reader, and his education has practically been continued through life. It is rare to find as large and well selected a private library of books as Mr. Grant possesses. He came to Canada in 1871, and for fourteen years taught school in the old historic school No. 5 in the "Paisley Block," Guelph Tp., and during which time he continued the good work of enlarging the school library, established by his predecessor, the late William Cowan, which is one of the best school libraries in Canada. He established the Sunday School at S.S. No. 5, "Paisley Block," in 1877, of which he was Superintendent for fourteen years. Mr. Grant also taught school for twelve years at S.S. No. 5, Eramosa. This was also a large school, frequently the attendance being as high as 80 pupils. He has been equally active in religious matters in Eramosa, and the Mimosa Presbyterian Church, in which he has taught the Bible Class for seventeen years. He has always been prominently identified with the educational interests, and has frequently been a delegate for South Wellington at the Ontario Educational Association. He has been President of the South Wellington Teachers' Association on two occasions. Mr. Grant owns 250 acres of land, con. 7, Eramosa, where he resides in a modern residence, which overlooks the country for miles around. This farm is an ideal one, both in location, improvements and cultivation, and the same systematic energy characterizes Mr. Grant's efforts in farming, as obtained in his long teaching experience.

He m. Euphemia Rea, dau. of the late James Rea. Issue: James Rea, Francis H., William M., and Ross.
