GRAHAM, James. (d), b. Cumberland, Eng., 1812, d. 1893; came to Canada, 1842; remained one year in Waterloo and came to Guelph Tp. in 1843, purchasing and settling on 50 acres on the "Paisley Block." This farm he cleared, but in 1873 he had the misfortune to lose his barn and crop by fire. He then sold out and purchased 200 acres in Eramosa, which, with the assistance of his boys, he cleared. Later he bought 135 acres near Owen Sound. The late James Graham m. Mrs. James Landells, nee Litester. They were m. by the Rev. Dr. Torrance, and it might be mentioned in this connection that their eldest son, Robert, was the first child baptised by Rev. Dr. Torrance in Guelph, and that he also officiated at the marriage of George L. Graham, the youngest son. The late James Graham, Sr., had the following issue: Robert (d.), Joseph, set. on the Owen Sound farm, given him by his father; James, Jr., in Manitoba, and George L.

The late James Graham, Sr., had just twenty-five cents in his pocket when he arrived at Guelph, in 1843; but he had what was better, a capacity for hard work, and an unwavering confidence in himself and the future; that he succeeded goes without saying. At the time of his death he left 335 acres of land, besides other property, and a reputation that his descendants might well feel proud of.

George L., b. 1851, m. Violet Murdoch, 1872, and has lived on the old homestead in Eramosa ever since. He has continued successfully the business started by his father. They were pioneers in thoroughbred cattle and Clydesdale horses. Issue: James, d. 1883; John, who m. Eliza Nelles in 1903; George, Jane, Joseph, Violet, William, Aggie and Robert. The members of the Graham family are representative citizens wherever they have settled.
