GOETZ, Joseph , b. Waterloo Co., 1845, was raised and educated in Waterloo Co., and is of French descent, but speaks German and English. He learned the blacksmith trade and worked at it twelve years, after which he sold out and came to Arthur Tp. in 1878, and purchased 300 acres, lot 15, con. 3, and improved it. When Mr. Goetz started business for himself he had only $82, saved from his wages as a blacksmith, but has since become able to purchase an additional 150 acres, making 450 in all. He has been very successful, and his property in now valued at $24,000, and is considered good value at that sum. He feeds cattle extensively for export, using all the grain raised on his land. Mr. Goetz had to work his way up from nothing and is justly proud of the fact that he never was sued in his life, and never was in a witness box. He raised and educated his large family assisting his sons to start for themselves when they were old enough. Mr. Goetz has been elected to the Council seven times, having opposition every time with the exception of one. He has also been Director and Auditor for the cheese factory. He is a Roman Catholic in religion, and a Liberal in politics, and his name was put on the list as J.P. In 1873 he m. Mary Brohman. Issue: Mrs. B. Epoch, Arthur; Edmund, at home; Adolphus, on part of the homestead; Henry, merchant, at Kenilworth; Oscar, at home; Caroline, Kenilworth; Alexander, Michael Angelo and Agatha, at home.
