GILFILLAN, Hastings (d.). The father of the subject of this sketch was the late Joseph Gilfillan, who was b. in Scot., and came to Quebec in the early twenties. He had three sons and one daughter: James, High School teacher, Bowmanville; Joseph, in Dakota, and Hastings.

The late Hastings Gilfillan was b. in Quebec in 1827, and educated there. In 1860 he came to Bowmanville, and in 1865 to Eramosa, and remained three or four years, during which time he m. Catherine Flynn. Prior to 1860 he had resided in Pennsylvania for some years, and shortly after his marriage he returned to Penn. and engaged in lumbering for fourteen years, when he came back to Eramosa, and bought lot 6, con. 2, and part of lot 6, con. 1, and there remained until his death in 1902. Issue: Mrs. John McDonald, Willis, Mrs. John Kelliher, Mrs. Thomas Bennett and Thomas.

Thomas b. 1880, m. Mary Flaherty in 1904, and lives on the old Eramosa homestead. The family belong to the Roman Catholic church, and in politics are Conservatives.
