GILDER, Charles , was b. Yorkshire, Eng., in 1835. He came to Canada at the age of 20, and worked for farmers in York Co. for five years. He then went back to England for eighteen months, where he was m. to Maria Garton. Wishing to secure a home for himself he again came to Canada and rented a farm in Amaranth Tp. for three years. In 1865 he came to Luther and took up the present homestead, where he built a small shanty, and started pioneer life in the swamp, as it was called in those days. He has succeeded in making a good home for his family, and in fitting them all to take a part in life’s battles. Mr. Gilder has held the office of Road Commissioner 33 years, and was in the Council one year. He is very much respected, and has never been in a law suit in his life. His first wife d. in 1877, age 42. Issue: Mrs. Henry Morden, Arthur Village; Mrs. John Benham, Luther; John J., and Mrs. Albert Church. In 1880 he m. Fanny, third dau. of the late John Church of Luther. Issue: Elwood, Richard, at home; Judson, a jeweller, and Isabella, at home.

John J., m. Mary Benham, and lives in Amaranth Tp.; Elwood m. Agnes Murchison, and lives on a part of the homestead.
