GILCHRIST, John
, b. 1782, parish of Skipness, Argyleshire, Scot., d. 1860, age 78. He was a
farmer in Scot., and came to Canada and Puslinch Tp. in 1843, with his wife and
family of six sons and three daughters. He bought rear lot 11, con. 1, 100
acres, and finished clearing the farm. He was a well educated man, a
Presbyterian and a Liberal. He m. Ann Taylor. Issue: William, Grey Co.;
Archibald, set. lot 16, con. 2; Mrs. John Wilkinson, Puslinch Tp., Malcolm, on
the homestead; Duncan, John, Mrs. Alex. McIntyre, Niagara-on-the-Lake; Peter,
lives on rear lot 11, con. 1, and Mrs. Arch. McDonald, Mich.
Duncan, b. 1823, d. 1890, age 67, was 20 years of age when he came to Puslinch Tp. About the time of the Russian war he bought 150 acres, rear lot 14, con. 9, where he lived until he death. He took a strong interest in agricultural matters, being the President of the Puslinch Agr. Society at different times, also President of the creamery at O. A. C. With Peter Mahon of Aberfoyle, and Hugh Cockburn, he was active in the organization of Farmer’s Institute work. He was Trustee S. S. No. 10 for thirty years, and was a Presbyterian and a Liberal. He m. Margaret McCaig. Issue: Alexander, principal of public school in Vancouver, B. C.; John, in B. C.; Hector, Annie and Janet, on the homestead; Duncan, in Portland, Oregon; William (d. age 23), and Malcolm R. (d. age 26). Hector, unm., b. on the homestead, succeeded to it at his father’s death, and carries on mixed farming. He is a hard worker and one of the best farmer in Puslinch Tp. He is well informed, being a great reader. In religion he is a Presbyterian, attending Duff’s Church, Morriston, and in politics a Liberal.
