GIBSON, George W
., was b. in Lockport, N.Y., in 1842. He is the youngest son of the late David
Gibson, who was b. at Dundee, Scot., and came to Canada in the early thirties
and became a well-known man of his time. The late David Gibson set. in York
Tp., and was elected a member of the Upper Canada Parliament. During the
Rebellion of 1837-8 he espoused the cause of Mackenzie, and, in consequence,
was compelled to flee, and accompanied Mackenzie to New York State, where he
remained ten years, when he returned to Canada. He afterwards followed his
occupation of P. L. S., and surveyed many of the townships in Ontario: Minto,
Melancthon, Proton, Luther, etc. He was Superintendent of Colonization Roads,
and many of the principal thoroughfares in Ontario were built under his
direction. While visiting Quebec, then the seat of government, in his official
capacity, he died, at the age of sixty years. Of his sons, James is retired at
Oshawa; Peter is on the old homestead in York Tp., and is P. L. S., and D. L,
S.
George W. owns 300 acres in Minto, near Drew, where he settled in 1870. He is a large farmer and progressive citizen. He belongs to the Methodist church, and donated the land on which the Drew Methodist church stands. He has been a Magistrate for many years, as well as School Trustee, and in politics is a Liberal.
