GERRIE Family, The . The pioneer of this branch of the Gerrie family in the county of Wellington was Andrew Gerrie. The Gerries came to Canada from Aberdeenshire, Scot., about 1837. The pioneer, Andrew Gerrie, m. Janet Wisely, of the same shire. He set. about two years in Nichol, then came to West Garafraxa and purchased 200 acres, on the Orangeville road, where A. P. Gerrie, his grandson, now resides. He was growing old when he arrived in Canada, and was unable to take an active part in the settlement. He was one of the earliest pioneers of temperance and Christianity in West Garafraxa. Both he and his wife d. many years ago, and were buried in St. Andrew's Church Cemetery, Fergus. His family were as follows: Mrs. James Robertson, Eramosa; Andrew, and, George.

Andrew set. on the homestead. In the old days he was a Councilman and Magistrate, and a prominent Reformer. He d. in 1885, and his wife d. 1892, and both were buried in Belsyde Cemetery, Fergus. He m. Isabella Hardy. Issue: Andrew W., Garafraxa; George H., Mrs. Alex. Stewart, West Garafraxa; and John, Eramosa.

George H. Gerrie owns 150 acres, lot 2, and part of lot 3, con. 6, West Garafraxa. He m. Nettie Switzer.

George Gerrie, son of the pioneer Andrew Gerrie, was b: Scot., 1822, and came to Canada with parents in 1837. He succeeded to half of the old homestead. He was a very able and public spirited man during his day, and besides being an active Reformer politician, was one of the earliest workers for the cause of temperance. He was the first man in the township who had his barn erected without the usual supply of liquor. He was physically powerful, and his feats of strength in the logging field and chopping fallow are still related by old residents.

Alexander P. Gerrie, his son, was b. West Garafraxa, 1863, and owns the old homestead of his grandfather, on lots 6 and 7, con. 4.; also owns west half lot 4, con. 5, making 200 acres in all. He has a fine brick residence, and good barns, and is a prominent man, following much in the footsteps of his father. He has held the Commission of the Peace since 1896. He m. Isabella Bayne. Issue: Olive, Fred, Roy and Rodger.

The Gerries are Liberals in politics, and among the best of West Garafraxa early settlers and property owners.
