GASS, James (d.), was b. in Co. Armagh, Ire., in 1807, and d. 1880, age 73. He was a whip-sawyer in Ireland, and came to Canada in 1848, settling on Garden Island, where he followed the same occupation for twelve years. In 1860 he came to Maryborough Tp,, and bought 33 acres on the northeast part of lot 17, con. 14. After living there until 1875 he bought 100 acres, east half, lot 8, con. 12, upon which he set. and lived until his death. He was an industrious.man, a Presbyterian, and a Conservative. He m. Eliza H. Benson in Ireland. Issue: Mrs. Thomas Brian, Garden Island; Robert, William H., and Mrs. Thomas Lappen, Garden Island.

Robert, b. 1954.on Garden Island, was six years of age when he came to Maryborough with his parents, and twenty-one when they moved to the present farm. He was Director of the Rothsay Cheese Factory for two years, and is a Presbyterian, and a Conservative. He m. Maggie Falconer, of Maryborough. They have an adopted son, Russell H.

William H. was b. in 1856 on Garden Island. He was four years old when he came to Maryborough Tp. He has always farmed in partnership with his brother Robert. They have increased the homestead by the purchase of 75 acres of the west half of lot 8, con. 12. They carry on mixed farming, and are industrious, popular and successful.
