GARBUTT, John
(d.). Garbutt, John, b. Yorkshire, Eng.. 1806, d. 1891, age 95.
He came to Canada in 1830, settling first in Tecumseh, and removing from
Whiteburst, York Co., to Peel, in 1846, when the country was a wilderness.
Mr. Garbutt brought very little money with him to Canada, and made his way
alone. He cleared his farm and accumulated at one time 400 acres. He was of
a retiring disposition, and never sought or held office in the township. He
was a class leader for years in the Methodist church, and in political views
was a Liberal. He m. Mary Cosford, who d. in 1892, aged 76. Issue: John G.,

Edward C., b. in 1849, succeeded his father on the homestead of 100 acres, lot 1, con. 5, where he carries on mixed farming and feeds cattle for market. He is a strong vigorous man, up-to-date in every respect; a class leader in the Methodist church, and for some years a School Trustee. He is Chief Ranger in the Canadian Order of Foresters, and in political views a Liberal. He m. Margaret J. Simpson, of Maryborough. Issue: Robert S., Mary G., William E., Margaret E., and Annie E.
