GALE, John
. of Pilkington, was b. in the parish of Logie Coldstone, Aberdeen,
in 1819, and came to Canada in the year 1832, settling first in Lachine; two
years later he moved to Hamilton, Ont., with his brother the late Rev. Alex.
Gale. In 1848 he came to Pilkington, taking up 100 acres of land, lot 4, Con.
2,
where he has since resided. He took an active part in organizing the
Presbyeterian church
in that district and has been an Elder in early days. He has always been a
Liberal in politics. In 1850 he m. Miami Bradt, who is living at the age of
77. Issue: Alexander m. Margaret Anderson, and is a merchant in Erin; Sophia
Jane m. William Cleghorn, manufacturer, Berlin; Hugh M., physician and
surgeon, a graduate of McGill, Montreal, m. Annie McDowell, and has been
engaged in the active practice of his profession in Bay City, Mich., for past
twenty-one years; John W. m. Dorothy Weston, and was for many years pilot
engineer over Stampede Pass, Cascade Mountains, Wash.; James S. m. Hattie
Gibson, a pioneer Presbyterian missionary in Korea, author of the Korean
English Dictionary and other works; Robert M. m. Mary Struthers, and is
manager of his father's farm. He carried on mixed farming, raising fine
cattle for export. He takes an active part in church work and is
Superintendent of the Sunday School and Clerk of Session. Issue: Ewart,
Beullah and James, in High School; John, Robert, Hattie and Gladys, at
home.
