Early Settlers of Wellington County

FYFE, Robertson (d.). This pioneer carpenter and farmer of Minto was b. in Forfarshire, Scot., in 1836, where he was raised and educated. After finishing school he learned the carpenter's trade, and in 1855 came to Canada, stopping first in Hamilton. His brother Peter has preceded him, and had purchased lot 96, con. D., Minto, a part of which he later sold to James Russell.

Robertson Fyfe came to Minto in 1857, and purchased and set. on the other half of this lot, while Peter bought and set. on lot 101, con. D. They were men far above the average, and occupied leading positions in the community. The early settlers could build log houses, but it required the skill of the carpenter to make and put in the windows, and this work Robertson Fyfe did for many of the pioneer settlers. He contracted for and built the first Knox Church in Harriston, and built many of the houses and barns in Minto. He had a good education, and was a natural mechanic. He also did cabinet work and made furniture as well as burial cases. Outside of Tax Collector and School Trustee, he never held municipal office. He m. Mary J. Richardson, Caledonia, Ont. Issue: Albert, Maria, Thomas, in B. C.; William, photographer, Port Arthur, and Mary J.

Robertson Fyfe was a life-long Liberal, a consistent member of, the Pres. church, and passed away in 1901, age 65.

Albert owns the old homestead (100 acres) and his sisters live with him. He has made a specialty of the bee business for the past twenty years, and is the prinicipal man in this line in Minto. He learned the business with the celebrated Jones, of Beeton.
