FULTON, John, Sr.,

James, a brother of John Fulton, St., had emigrated from Scot, to Canada in 1856, and took up land in Minto. He was the "path finder" as it were, and in 1860 George and William Fulton were sent to Canada by their father, John Fulton, Sr., to locate on this land and build a log house for the reception of the family; while doing the work they boarded with William Scott, a near neighbour, who had preceded them a few years. John Fulton Sr., followed with the family in 1862. He first owned 200 acres of land and later purchased 100 acres more. He had five sons, William, James, George, John and Elliott. John Fulton, Sr., was a man of excellent principles, intelligent, industrious, and enterprising, and accumulated a fine property. He d. in 1903, at the ripe old age of 88 years, respected by all who knew him. George Fulton, third son of John Fulton, Sr., was b. in Scot. in 1845 and consequently was only fifteen years of age when he came to Canada. After remaining on the farm for about five years, he formed a co-partnership with William Lyons and erected a sawmill on lot 70, which is still known as Fulton's Mills, and continued in the lumber business for thirty-two years. This proved a very lucrative venture, as lumber was always in active demand. A few years before the death of his farther, George Fulton purchased the old homestead, and later retired from the lumber business in favor of his son Elliott Fulton, who still carries it on , as well as farming 100 acres which he owns on lot 39, con. 13. George Fulton owns 600 acres of land in Minto, fully one-half of it being under cultivation. His life has been a very successful one, in that he has not only secured a large competency, but has the confidence and respect of the whole community. He was many years in municipal office, being Councillor, Deputy Reeve, School Trustee, etc. From: Historical Atlas of the County of Wellington, Ontario.
