FREELAND, Joseph (d.), was b. near Keady, Co. Armagh, Ire., in 1814, and d. in 1842, age 78. He was a farmer in Ireland and came to Canada in 1846, and set. in Montague. His brother William came with him and set. at Freeland P.O., between Brockville and Kingston, where the family still live. In 1849, he came to Maryborough and located on 200 acres, lot 13. con. 14. Shortly after that he gave the west half of lot 13, to Isaac Mitchell, his brother-in.law. He cleared his farm, not a tree being cut when he came, and it is said that his cash capital was 12c when he arrived in Maryborough. He left a good place in Ire., where his father was an extensive farmer, and could never be induced to return. He was a Presbyterian and a Conservative. He m. Jane Mitchell in Ire. in 1846; she is living, age 78. Issue: Samuel, in Palmerston; James A. and Joseph, Wallace Tp.; Robert, Seattle; William A., Sask; Thomas and Margaret J., at home.

Thomas was b. on the homestead where he has always lived, and to which he succeeded in 1892 at his father's death. He is a Presbyterian and a Conservative, and has been Trustee of S.S. No. 14 for three years, and is unmarried.
