FOOTE, David Sr.
, Late of village of Elora, was b. in Kettins, Forfarshire, Scot.
1823. He
emigrated to Canada in 1842, and set. on lot 19, conc. 12, Nichol, in 1848,
where he resided until his death in 1891. He was elected first Reeve of Elora
in 1858, and for many years occupied the offices of Reeve, Assessor, and High
School Trustee there. He m. Barbara Smart. Issue: James (d.); Mrs. John
Sharp, Mrs. Henry Wissler, Isabel and David, residing in Elora; Annie G.,
teacher, Calgary; Jean and Mary, teachers, Toronto.
David succeeded to the father on the above homestead. He m. Jemima Cuthbert. Issue: David, James B., Alexander B., Robert G., Margaret E., and Dorothy J. James, son of David Foote, Sr., was b. "Mulhall" farm, near Dundee, Perthshire, Scot., in 1817, and d. 1862. In 1838 he m. Catharine Fergson, and in 1842, they sailed from Dundee in the "Lady Kennaird" (I'd bet my socks this is a type error of Kinnaird!), and in five weeks, landed at Quebec, and from there came straight to Fergus, arriving on the 7th of June, of that year. For 12 years he rented a farm on 8th Con. of Nichol, when they moved to Keppel Tp., and bought a farm, living there until his death. Issue: Mrs. John Black, Fergus; Mrs. David Pyatt, Manitoulin Island; James F. (d.); George S., on Manitoulin Island; William T. conductor, G.T.R.; Robert D., Pt. Edward; Charles H., Fergus; John T. (d.), Andrew H. His widow is 91 years of age, still survives, and lives with her son Andrew H., in Fergus. Andrew H. Foote, was b. in Keppel Tp. He learned his trade as baker with the late Wm. Ritchie of Fergus, after which he worked for a few years in the U.S., also in Hamilton and Manitoulin Island. He later opened a bakery on the Owen Sound Road, Fergus, which he still operates. He m.
