FERGUSON, John (d.), late of Gwillimbury, was b. in Pertshire, Scot., in 1796, and d. in 1866. He came to Canada in 1832, an worked in Toronto as a carpenter for one year, most of the time making coffins for people who died of cholera, that was epidemic at that time. He then set. in West Gwillimbury, Simcoe Co., purchasing for $400 farm on lot 6, con. 6-the same property is now worth $8,000. Mr. Ferguson earned, himself, every dollar of his valuable property, and educated his large family, some of whom are in the leading profession. He was a good citizen, universally respected, a Presbyterian, and is a Liberal. He m. Christina McKay, who d. in 1884, age, 72. Issue James (d.), Peter, Donald, in Toronto; Alexander, in Manitoba; William J., a barrister in Wiarton; and Mrs. D. D. Campbell, in Listowel. Peter Ferguson came to Peel Tp. in 1864, and owns 100 acres on lot 9, con. 8. At the time of purchase the farm was all bush; a shanty erected, and the arduous labor of clearing begun. As a result of labors, Mr. Ferguson is now a prosperous and successful farmer. He is a Presbyterian and a Liberal. He was Councillor for three yeas and Deputy Reeve for three years. In 1888 he m. Sarah Brown. Issue: John Percival and Charles.
