FAIR, Richard
, was b. Co. Tyrone, Ire., on Lord Caledon's estate about 1825.
He came to Canada in 1849 and worked in a tannery in Georgetown for four or
five years. In 1854 he came to Maryborough and bought 100 acres, west half
lot 10, con.15, paying $2.50 per acr for it. A few trees had been cut in
one corner of the place, and he finished clearing, with the exception of
about five acres, for which he paid for the chopping. He was trustee of the
old school which stood on the corner of his farm, kept by one Clark, which
was the only school house on the 14th line. He was an elder of the Calvin
Presbyterian church, Rotlhsay, from the time of its organization. He has not
been interested in politics, but has always been a very strong and active man.
Although he has reached the ripe age of over 80, he is still quit active and
retains the cheerful and sunny disposition for which he has always been
noted. In religion he is a Presbyterian, and in politics a Conservative. In
1852 he m. Hessy Powell of Georgetown, who d. in 1900, age 76. Issue:
Robert, Winnipeg; George, Lansing, Mich.; William, Eliza J. (d.), and John
R., Glenborough, Man.
Andrew, brother of Richard Fair, was on the west half lot 16, con. 15, about 1850. He came from Ireland about 1847, living in Trafalgar Tp. for two years. Of his family, John is in Arthur, and William in West Luther. William, son of Richard Fair, was b. on the farm where he has always lived and which he has owned for eleven years. He carries on mixed farming, and is an Elder of the Calvin Presbyterian church, Rothsay. He has been a Director of the cheese factory for three years.
