EVANS, John
(d.), of Puslinch, was b. in Staffordshire, Eng., 1780; d. in
1860. He came to Puslinch, 1837, and bought and set. on 100 acres, lot 2,
con. 4. He was a Methodist, and a Liberal. He m. Jane Fenton. Issue:
Samuel, John, James, William, and Mrs. James Sault.
James Evans, son of the above, was b. in Staffordshire, Eng., in 1811; d. 1891. He came to Puslinch with his father in 1837. He bought 200 acres, lots 4 and 5, con. 4. The late Mr. Evans was an active member of the Methodist church, and a Liberal in politics. He bought 200 acres, lots 4 and 5 con. 4. Ann Jeffrey and set. in Leamington; Mrs. Wm. Broughton, Joseph (d.), Smith, James, set. Leamington, where he is a prosperous merchant, and Mrs. J. C. McLean, Toronto. Smith Evans is the owner of the homestead, where he is engaged in dairy farming. He is also a breeder of Oxforddown sheep and Berkshire hogs, and has been a successful exhibitor, winning over 100 prizes at the principal fairs in Ontario and Quebec. He has won many first prizes on home-bred lamb, and makes large sales all over the continent. Mr. Evans has acquired all of his property by his own industry and energy. While one of the leading men of the township and county, he has never sought municipal office, although often requested. In politics he is a Liberal. He m. Sarah Hammersley. Issue: Robert, who manages the farm; Mrs. Oswald Sorby, Mrs. James Buchanan, Albert, m. Martha Stum, and set. at Acton; William in Stratford, and Bella, at home. William, son of the late John Evans, was b. in Staffordshire, Eng. and came with his father to Canada in 1837, and d. in 1890. He succeeded his father to the farm, lot 5, con. 3, of Puslinch, where he lived until his death. He m. Mary Kidd. Issue: William F., set. in Waterloo; John, set. on Manitoulin Island, now in Guelph; Mrs. John Taylor, set. in Guelph; Alfred, Annie (d.), Thomas and David. Alfred, b. in 1852, owns 200 acres, lot 12, con. 3, Puslinch. He m. Margaret Porter. Issue: Frederick, Mrs. Grier, set. in Owen Sound; Edith engaged in missionary work in St. Catharines; George, Bertha, Percy, Arthur, James, Kenneth and Robert.
