ELLIOTT, William
(d.), b. Meggot, Knowes, Peebles, Scot., and d. in Guelph
Tp. in 1866, at the age of 87 years. He m. Janet Tate, and in 1831 they came
to Canada and purchased their farm on the "Paisley Block," where they set.
and lived the balance of their respective lives. They were among the first
settlers, the Fergusons, Alexanders, McCorkindales and Alandersons having
preceded them, while the Cleghorns, Robert Brydon, Sr., the Fyfes and
Mclntoshes came in about the same time. The late William Elliott and his
sons cleared their farm, and the family have always been identified as one of
the most respected in the community. Issue: Janet (d. young), William, Jr.,
b. 1815, d. unm. age 52; Robert, Mrs. Robert Brydon, George, Mrs. Thomas
Anderson, James and Mrs. John Renton.
Robert, whose portrait appears upon another page of this work, was b. Peebles, Scot., 1817; d. 1905. He was only fourteen years old when he came to the "Paisley Block" with his parents, and was raised there. In 1844 he purchased lots 18 and 19, con. 6, on which he erected a log house. In 1845 he m. Jane Richardson (she d. in 1890, age 75) and installed her in his new home, where they started on the journey of life with little, excepting good constitutions and an ambition to succeed. That they did make a success in life is evidenced, not only by the beautiful farms left to their descendants, but by a reputation for integrity and good citizenship equalled only by the best. Mr. Elliott cleared this farm, as well as an additional 50 acres adjoining, which he purchased later, and here they passed their long and useful lives. Issue: William (d. infancy), Janet at home; Jane (d.), William R., Agnes, Mrs. James Mclntosh(d.), and John. Of this branch: William R. m. Sarah Wright. He is an extensive farmer in Guelph Tp., where he owns 200 acres, just east of Guelph City and makes a specialty of thoroughbred Shorthorn cattle, of which he is an extensive breeder, and raises the best. He exhibited the champion Shorthorn steer at Guelph Fat Stock Show in 1904, winning four championships. He has shipped thoroughbred cattle to the N.-W. for years. In religion he is a Presbyterian, and in politics a Liberal. He has been a member of the Guelph Tp. Council for two years. Issue: Agnes, Robert and William. John m. Elizabeth Aitchison. Set. on the homestead farm. Issue: Robert, Margaret and Ellen. He is a successful, progressive and sterling citizen. He is engaged in mixed farming. Geoge was b. Peebles, Scot., 1821, and d. on his Guelph farm in 1888. He m. Margaret Cleghorn, and his experience in life was similar to that of his respected brother Robert. In 1848 he bought lots 24, 25 and 26, con. 6, Guelph Tp., and here settled, and like the other Elliotts, was one of the most substantial and respected citizens in the township, leaving a fine property at his demise. Issue: William C., John, Mrs. Eli Ridolls, Mrs. George Whitelaw, Christina (d.), Mrs. John McIntosh, Mrs. Thomas Whitelaw, Robert G., and Elizabeth. Of this branch: William C. m. Lizzie Comb, set. Guelph City. Issue: Lillian. Robert G., m. Isabella Whitelaw, dau. of John Whitelaw, and owns and farms the old homestead (150 acres). This farm and improvements is one of the best in the section. James, b. 1820, d. 1893. He m. Margaret Murdock, and set. in N.W., where he was very successful. Issue: William, James Hugh, Mrs. Fraser, Jessie, Mrs. Eagland, and Margaret.
